Typecast Awards - a new social network for Lancashire teens
June 8th, 2009
Every so often, public organisations really get something right, and Typecast Awards seems to me to be one of those “delicious moments”!
Anyone who has ever tried to get more than a grunt out of their teenager will know how hard it is to undertand what they are thinking, never mind have an actual conversation with them.
Yet they happily text away for hours, type furiously on their Facebook page, and upload homemade videos onto You Tube.
So I was intrigued to come across “Typecast Awards” at http://www.typecastawards.co.uk.
Somebody here is trying to harness all this online/mobile phone chatter and give the kids a place to say what they really think about what adults think about them!
Seems the kids can upload videos, songs, whatever - and the prizes on offer look very teen-friendly!
This is a very interesting experiment, so I’ll be keeping a close eye on it!

This title may sound a little ‘hoofy-poofy’ but
don’t let it fool you. Even if you’re a hard-nosed
skeptic who shudders at words like ‘love’ and
‘heart’ this book will radically boost your sales.
Feeling good about yourself afterwards will just
be a nice side effect.

Twitter - tools I’m using now
April 22nd, 2009
Twitter is the newest way to make connections on the internet, and it’s becoming increasingly important for anyone wanting to build their online business.
I started out with just one account in my own name (I was one of the very first to join, so could get the Twitter name Shelagh!)
Then I wanted to have a separate account for Spiritus - the Spiritual Marketing Directory, and suddenly it all started to get very awkward and time-consuming.
But in the online world, where there’s a problem soon there will be a solution.
The most useful solutions I’ve found to date:
TweetDeck - allows you to create Groups of people, or Search subjects, so you can keep an eye on Tweets which particularly interest you. Currently free of charge; the best there is at the moment, but watch for new ones comes along soon.
Twellow - like Yellow pages, but for the Twitter world. Easy to use, great place to find new people with same interests as you.
Twollo is a wonderful, free tool that goes one step further than Twellow, and actually carries out the Follow step for you. You select keywords or phrases, and Twollo automatically follows any one including that keyword in a Tweet. It’s easy to exclude anyone who is not on the same wavelength as you.
I started by just allowing Twollo to find 10 new people for each keyword, and then built up gradually as I got more confident that I had the right keywords.
I now have several Twitter accounts (blame my Butterfly brain!) so I was delighted to discover *Tweetlater. The free version does most things that most people want, but there is a paid version with a few more useful tools like being able to send a DM to everyone who follows you, and to set a time for your Tweets to go out (useful if you want to send something to a different time-zone whilst you sleep!).
Finally, the very best thing I’ve found is a little training programme called *Twitter Traffic Machine.
I am not usually a fan of training programmes that use videos, but this one really works.
It’s written by Bill Crosby, and he goes through every step, showing you exactly what do to setting up Twollo, Tweetlater, Twellow and a couple more things I haven’t bothered with.
He also explains the basics of affiliate marketing, which is good if you’ve never done that before.
So now I’m all set up, making lots of new connections, and thoroughly enjoying the new world of Twitter!
Hope this helps you to get started, or get better, too!
