Aging Gracefully: Some Things Many of Us Forget
Author Carolyn Brent and a Panel of Experts Share their Wisdom November 8th, 9th and 10th

These days we only have to flick on the TV to find ourselves inundated with a barrage of commercials for products that are supposed to make us look younger. All around us, we are told that getting older is something we need to hide, mask or “fix.”

But the truth is, every one of us is getting older, and the more we focus on staying young, the less attention we seem to be giving to the practical and emotional realities of the natural process aging.

Baby Boomers, once known as the “hippie generation,” are now reaching retirement age. While they are starting to have to deal with many issues around their own aging, many of them also have parents who are elderly and can no longer care for themselves. As a result, tens of millions of Baby Boomers are currently caring for their elderly, ill or dying parents. The problem is, there is very little information or support for Baby Boomers and their families, to help them deal with all the emotional, financial and legal aspects of care giving, and the inevitable death of their parents. And without this information and support, many families find themselves torn apart by financial strain, and arguments arising from frustration and confusion.

For these reasons, author Carolyn A. Brent, M.B.A. wrote her new book Why Wait? The Baby Boomers’ Guide to Preparing Emotionally, Financially and Legally for a Parent’s Death. Carolyn is a former clinical educational manager in the pharmaceutical industry. She is an activist and advocate working with the U.S. Congress for the purpose of creating change to protect seniors and veterans from financial and medical abuse.

In her book, Why Wait? Carolyn provides a comprehensive handbook for family caregivers, outlining a step-by-step process that can spare caregivers and their families the stress of conflict at a time of grieving and loss, and provide an opportunity to mend fences and renew the connection and communication they once enjoyed with each other.

The book Why Wait? is having its official Amazon launch on Tuesday November 15th. To celebrate this launch, Carolyn will be hosting a FR*EE 3-part telesummit, with a panel of experts in the field of aging and care giving on November 8th, 9th and 10th:

Carolyn A Brent – Why wait?

October 18th, 2011

Today I am delighted to speak with Carolyn A Brent, who has written one of those books that we need to read – but which we would really much rather not read..!

Many of us baby-boomers will have to deal with the ending of the life of one or both parents.

Yet we are woefuly badly prepared!

The full title of Carolyn’s book is Why Wait? The Baby
Boomers’ Guide to Preparing Emotionally, Financially & Legally
for a Parents’ Death

It is a guide for family caregivers and aging parents – and is, as such, much needed!

Carolyn travels throughout the United States lecturing about the
importance of adult siblings and parents having what she calls
“crucial conversations” in preparation for the end-of-life issues
they may face, so that instead of being torn apart, they can come
together as a strong family. She is committed to enhancing the
lives of family caregivers and their aging parents throughout the
world.

Carolyn’s passion for her subject started when she was caring for
her own father, who was diagnosed with dementia in 1997. From that experience, she found that neither she nor her family truly understood not only the medical challenges related to aging and chronic illness, but also the financial and emotional weight that these bring to bear on a family.

In 2009, she founded her business Grandpa’s Dream and the non-profit organization Caregiver Story for the dissemination of information through books, speaking engagements and a web-based info portal,
with the hopes of them becoming instruments of positive change for other families who were experiencing the same pain and heartache that she experienced, and who were being challenged by the need to plan for their aging parents’ medical, financial, and legal well-being.

Carolyn’s professional background gives her rare insight into the medical side of these complex issues. For seventeen years she worked for some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. She served as a clinical education manager for Pharmacia, in which capacity she worked with some of the leading and key opinion leaders in the medical field. In her role as a senior therapeutic sales representative for another major pharmaceutical company, she provided information to doctors and staff on a variety of subjects, including medical health care plans.

Carolyn has also worked as a volunteer within different assisted-living facilities, including the San Joaquin County Behavioral Health facility. Since 2008, she has volunteered her services to Congress, working toward making the Veterans Administration responsible for upholding the decisions that veterans have made about the appointment of a financial fiduciary and medical representative in the event of their disability and protecting those whom they select.

Her goal in life is to empower caregivers and their family members with the knowledge of the possible challenges they might have to face together while caring for an aging parent.

Carolyn received a B.A. in Business Administration from National University in Los Angeles, California, and an M.B.A. at the University of Phoenix.

She currently resides in Northern California

Her book launches on November 15 2011 and this is her invitation to you:
